FAQs
How does air conditioning work?
In summer, an air conditioner seems to cool the air in your home, but it actually makes your home less warm by removing heat from the indoor air and transferring that heat to the outdoor air. Heat is extracted from the home by passing indoor air across a refrigerant coil in the indoor unit. Refrigerant line then carries the heat to the outdoor unit, where it is released into the outside air. The cooling cycle continues until the indoor temperature reaches the desired temperature setting on the thermostat.
In winter, the process is reversed with heat transferred to the indoor air.
What size air conditioner do I need?
The cooling and heating capacity of an air conditioner is measured in kilowatts (kW), and the capacity you require depends mostly on the size of the area (measured in m² or squares) you need to heat/cool.
If you buy an air conditioner that is too small it will not cool or heat adequately. For help on sizing, please check the product description page of the air conditioner you are interested in, or please contact us here or phone us on 1300 664 009.
What kind of warranty is provided on Ayre air conditioners?
All our air conditioners come with a three year on-site warranty for domestic and residential use, and covers parts and labour. Please see our warranty page for more information.
What is an inverter?
Inverter air conditioners reach the desired room temperature faster, and then constantly adjust to maintain perfect comfort. Inverter air conditioners are a little more economical to operate and quieter to run than fixed speed units.
The inverter component varies the speed and output of the compressor in the outdoor unit, to match the required capacity of the indoor unit. Thus, an inverter model can achieve better efficiency than fixed speed models and is therefore cheaper to run.
What is MEPS?
MEPS stands for Minimum Energy Performance Standards which have been introduced by the Australian government. Please see our MEPS information page.
Why do the new energy labels show less stars for the same efficiency?
As of April 1st 2010, there have been changes to the way new energy star ratings are calculated. While the appearance of the energy labels is similar, the revised calculation will reduce the number of stars on the label for the same energy consumption.
What is R410A refrigerant?
All Ayre systems use the latest R410A refrigerant – highly efficient and provides superior energy savings. It was developed as an environmentally friendly and more efficient alternative to replace R22 (Freon). R410A refrigerant has zero ozone depletion, low toxicity, and excellent stability.
What is zoning?
Zoning only applies to our ducted systems, and can be configured for the various ways you use your home. Maybe you don't agree with another family member on the comfortable temperature setting, or perhaps you have unoccupied areas that don't need heating or cooling?
Ayre ducted systems allow you to divide your home into separate areas, giving you comfort and control you've always wanted. By using multiple zones, your air conditioner can also cater for a much larger area.
What does EER mean?
The EER, or Energy Efficiency Rating, measures the air conditioners energy consumption and efficiency. The higher the EER rating, the less energy is being consumed for the specific output capacity.
What is the compressor
The compressor is the like the heart of the air conditioner. It is located in the outdoor unit, and pumps the refrigerant to the indoor unit. All our air conditioners feature Toshiba compressors, made in Japan.
Do Ayre air conditioners include pipes?
Because every installation is different, pipes (and vents/ductwork for ducted systems) are not included with our air conditioners. These items should be included in your installer's fee. We also stock a range of these items in our "accessories" section.
Can anyone install an Ayre system?
Our air conditioners can be installed by tradesmen of your choice. Installation instructions are included with all our systems. You should ensure that installation/maintenance is carried out by qualified and licensed tradesmen, otherwise the warranty may be invalidated.
How do I arrange installation?
We can recommend an installer from our network of agents. Please submit a free quote request here.
How much does installation cost?
The installation cost will vary depending on the type of air conditioner (i.e. split or ducted), your building configuration, and your location. Please submit a free quote request here.
How much is delivery?
Delivery cost varies, and is calculated based on your location and the weight of your order. Please use our shopping cart system to calculate the delivery cost for your order.
Can I pick up my order from the Melbourne warehouse instead?
Yes, once you have placed your order, an appointment can be made to collect the goods from our warehouse in Dandenong South. Click here for more details.
Does Ayre have a showroom?
No, we only sell directly through our website and over the phone. By selling direct to the customer we are able to offer such incredible value for money.
Does Ayre offer trade or dealer discounts
Yes we do. Please see our trade discount section.
Can I switch my air conditioner off at the power?
It is ok to turn the power off, especially if you are away for long periods. Most units have a low wattage crankcase heater that keeps the compressor warm. If the compressor is cold, damage may occur at start-up. If you turn off your air conditioner, it must be turned back on at least 12 hours before use.
How often do I clean the air filters?
According to the Ayre warranty terms and conditions, the air filters must be cleaned at least once per year. Please follow the instructions in the user manual or request a service.
My unit does not blow air immediately after it starts operation in heating mode. Why?
The air conditioner conducts a "warm-up" operation first so that it does not blow cold air in heating mode. The fan starts operating after a few minutes of warm up operation. (The warm-up process becomes longer when the outside air temperature is lower).
My unit is blowing hot air but it is in cooling mode. Why?
If the system does not seem to reach the desired temperature then it is possible that the system has developed a leak and has lost the refrigerant. Please refer to the user manual for more information or request a service.
Can air conditioning make you ill?
Legionnaires' disease is not contracted through domestic air conditioning systems, like the models sold by Ayre. The risk of legionella has been exaggerated by the media, and the risk has only been associated with commercial air conditioning systems caused by incorrect cooling tower maintenance.
All our systems include a healthy air filtration system which traps fine airborne particles. This can help to reduce the triggers that affect asthma and allergy sufferers.
